Light a Candle
Richard Byrd Sr, age 73 years old, born in Macon, Georgia, now residing in Saint Petersburg, FL passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2019 after losing his battle with cancer.
He was a beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who loved collecting money, eating everything, fixing things inside and outside the house, spending time with family, bowling, watching all sports, and being around his grandchildren.
Richard was born in Macon, GA on June 7, 1946 and moved to Saint Petersburg, FL in 1962. He graduated from Gibbs High School in 1965.
Richard was married to Lilla "Cookie" Byrd on June 20, 1969. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in June 2019 on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship.
First Sargeant Richard Byrd served in the United States Army for 26 plus years with honor, valor, and distinction. In addition, he worked for the United States Postal Service for 15 years.
Richard was an active member of Rock of Jesus Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the Men’s Ministry and Usher boards for many years.
Richard is survived by his wife Lilla, sisters Christina Patrick & Thelma Scott, daughter Kacia Thompson (Keith), sons Richard Byrd Jr (LaSanda) and Reginald Byrd (MaryAnn). 9 Grandchildren, 1 Great Grandchild, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, family, and friends.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents Harry & Annie Mae Byrd and siblings Harry Jr, Helen, Danny, Edmond, Edward,Virginia, and Patricia.
The family would like to thank the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL for providing support, love, and compassion to Richard.
